What the Board Does

The Board of Directors is the governing body for the members of Community Co-op Market and is responsible for ensuring organizational performance on behalf of all of the co-op's members. The Board's functions include:

  • Development of the co-op’s mission (called the Ends Policy) and oversight to ensure that the co-op is working to meet its mission by, among other things, overseeing development of the business plan and budget, and annually evaluating how well the co-op is doing to meet these goals.  
  • Ongoing evaluation of the financial condition of the co-op. 
  • Delegation of responsibility and authority to co-op management through written policies.
  • Oversight of and monitoring of compliance with written policies.
  • Along with co-op management, communication with members about the co-op through the Annual Meeting and other methods.

As you can see from the summary of our responsibilities above, we need board members who are leaders, servants, stewards and visionaries. If you submit an application, please note we have three current openings, two for a regular three-year term, and one for a two-year term. We ask that you carefully read the information we’ve provided about the co-op and board’s role before filling out the application. Note that the deadline for submitting the Candidate Application is February 1, 2021.

In addition to the responsibilities and a few eligibility requirements described in the information package, we have certain expectations of board members that we urge you to consider and understand. Directors should expect to spend an average of 2-3 hours per month (non-meeting months) and 5-6 hours per month (quarterly meeting months) on board-related activities.

Our expectations for board members include:

  • Participate fully in board meetings. Attend all meetings of the board – the current 2022 schedule is as follows: January 11th (special), February 8th, May 10th, May 14th, August 9th, & November 8th. All meetings are from 5-8 pm ET except for the Annual Board Meeting on May 14th meeting which is from 3-5pm.
  • Prepare in advance of every board meeting by reviewing the agenda, reading the packet, and compiling your feedback/questions.
  • Attend the mandatory orientation for new board members.
  • Actively participate in board discussion via e-mail or phone between meetings as necessary.
  • Attend other events, such as annual member meetings and special events.
  • Have access to a computer; internet; email.
