Curb Your Inflammation

Dr. Andrew Weil is often known as the doctor who looks like Santa. To me he was influential for being one of the few M.D.'s who knew something about natural medicine and was open to discussing the importance of diet in our health.

After going to Harvard Medical School, Weil retreated to Virginia and practiced vegetarianism, yoga and meditation. Out of his personal health practice he became a vocal advocate for reducing inflammation with proper diet and supplements.

Inflammation is a natural response to injury or toxins. Think of how your finger swells up around a paper cut. That’s considered acute inflammation, and it’s critical to our ability to heal. Chronic inflammation, however, occurs when the body produces inflammatory cells when there’s no injury. The result of chronic inflammation can be damage to healthy cells, cancer, type-2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s and cardiovascular disease—to name just a few serious maladies.
No surprise that lifestyle is responsible for chronic inflammation: Foods high in bad fats, sugar, refined carbs; alcohol and smoking; obesity; irregular sleep; chronic stress including social isolation and loss.

CCM’s Wellness Department can help with products that reduce inflammation. Supplements that are considered anti-inflammatory include:

  • Vitamins C, E and Selenium, Coenzyme Q10, Multi-vitamins containing vitamin D and folic acid

  • Calcium (suggested for women only)

  • Fish oil (only if you aren’t eating oily fish twice a week)

  • Herbal supplements Ginger and Turmeric

Along with getting a good night’s sleep, getting to the gym regularly, and eating mostly a plant-based diet, I take a full spectrum Curcumin (by Solgar), vitamin D, and Co-Q10 every day. I have a family history of heart disease and arthritis, so I am especially motivated to find ways to reduce inflammation.

Now is the time to stock up on anti-inflammatory remedies and just about everything else you’ll need for optimum health during our Wellness Weekend, March 17-19, when all supplements are 20% off!
